So many schools in Haiti do not have electricity. In the past, generators were the only means of providing the needed power. But the cost of running a generator was always prohibitive. Gasoline in Haiti is usually 30% more costly than in the United States. So providing electricity to schools, homes, and businesses required the ongoing purchase of gasoline.
With the advent of solar panels there is no need for gasoline. The solar panels store the sun’s energy and through the batteries and the inverter, electricity is readily available at a one-time expense. Schools and other buildings in the Third World who have used solar panels and batteries for 20 years have incurred no costs besides the initial expenses.
We have schools in Jeremie and other places with computers still in their shipping boxes because of the need for electricity.
