Until recently achieving such a goal was most difficult. The only means at the disposal of the teachers and the students were the blackboard, a piece of chalk, and some outdated textbooks. The advent of the computer, the internet, and mobile-learning devices has opened the way to achieving this goal. About 25% of the schools in Haiti have computers and about 5% are internet-connected. But as a new educational system is put into place and funds from the world community are reaching Haiti after the earthquake, technology will more and more be found in every classroom. The challenge is to prepare the teachers and the students today for a whole new way of learning that is arriving in classrooms throughout Haiti.
InterActive Education for
Haiti
will provide a rich array of ready-made lessons in a range of topics
that will unlock the potential of the student’s abilities in education and
training. All of these lessons are founded on Inquiry-based learning and
Critical-based thinking that is more and more becoming the standard for
education throughout the world.
Tablets are ideal for bringing Inquiry-based learning to the classrooms in Haiti. Tablets can be downloaded with the entire curriculum, countless books, and other materials for a year. Even in schools with little or no electricity, they can be re-charged several times a week and used. If only one tablet is available per classroom, a projector can be connected and the lessons and materials can be shown on a screen or a wall.
